Internship Program for Earthships: Sustainable Green Buildings

earthship intern programThe Earthship Internship program is open to anyone with an interest in sustainability and a willingness to work hard. People of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Interns work full time on Earthship construction sites learning building concepts and techniques through hands-on experience.

We will offer 8 internship sessions and will accept up to 8 interns per session.

Each session will last for one month. Internships are unpaid positions.

2011 Earthship Intern Schedule and Application will be posted September 30, 2010.

Upon completion of the session, interns will either attend or receive a certificate to attend a three-day long Earthship Seminar.
We have 8 intern sessions but only 3 seminars.

What to expect:
Each session will start with a brief orientation meeting at the Earthship Biotecture Visitor’s Center, then the interns will be assigned to their job sites. Expect to be challenged physically and mentally, to work hard and play hard.

Where to stay:
Interns are responsible for finding and paying for their own housing. There may be Earthship intern housing available with shared bathroom and kitchen at the REACH Earthship Community or at the Greater World Earthship Community or both. Check back with us in a few months on this possibility. Another option is the Abominable Snowmansion Hostel in Arroyo Seco, about a 20 minute drive from the work site (please note the listing of this option does not constitute a recommendation, some interns have liked this hostel, some have disliked it very much). Other interns have camped in the Carson National Forest or at the Greater World Earthship Community. Camping at the Greater World Earthship Community is free but please note: there are no facilities (no shower, no drinking water and no internet access.)

2010 internship sessions at the Earthship World Headquarters are full.

What to bring:
Taos is very spread out so you will need a vehicle, some people have managed with just a bicycle but due to distance and elevation this option is nearly impossible and there is no public transportation. The weather in Taos is very volatile so bring lots of layers of clothes you don’t mind destroying at work, sturdy closed-toed work shoes, sunscreen and a hat with a wide brim to protect you from the intense sun. If you are camping you’ll want a tent or camper shell on a pickup, sleeping bag, a five gallon water jug, and a good flashlight.

Earthship Intern Tools
Interns need to bring a few simple tools. If you don’t already have these items, buy inexpensive tools, spend no more than $50 on these. Also, be prepared to spend an additional $25 on tools while you are here.

  • 25’ tape measure utility knife w/blades
  • framing hammer (over 16 oz in weight)
  • tin snips
  • tool belt
  • pencils
  • Sharpie marker
  • heavy duty rubber gloves
  • leather gloves

In the classical "U" module of an Earthship it is stated on page 88 of Volume 1 that the recommended maximum width of a "U" is 18'0". What is the theory behind this? Just curious. All the room widths in my current drawings are at 18' but was wondering why something wider is not recommended. Is this perhaps related to weight loads on the roof? Thanks for setting up these new threads.

I see that all your internships for 2010 are filled. I just graduated from The University of Michigan with an undergraduate degree in Architecture, and am very interested in the Green Building Industry, and designing environmentally friendly buildings. How do I find out if someone who is committed to an internship drops out? I have no commitments to a job as of now, and would very much like to join your efforts, and become educated about this amazing building technique. Cannot wait to hear back.

I've been waiting for September 30th, 2010 like a school kid waits for summer vacation! I'm just wondering, how do the applications work? I am guessing it's first come-first serves and have planned on waiting online on September 29th until midnight to submit my application!! Is there anything vital information I should have handy at that moment? I don't want to miss out on a chance to intern in 2011!

Hi, I've been following what you're doing for a few years. I am interested in public policies which enable earth-building and other forms of building which use on-site, sustainable, insulated, and reused materials. Recently, I finished a master's program of Urban and Regional Planning at UC-Denver. I am actively looking for ways to get involved in promoting these practices, navigating political barriers, and changing policies to more readily support these practices. I have experience in policy research and would like to work with other interested parties to draft new policies. If you are involved in this, or can refer me to others who are, I would love to offer my knowledge, time, and passion to help people build sensibly and affordably. Thanks!

VERY IMPORTANT!

I studied civil engineering and now constructing Earthships all around Turkey is my biggest dream. Only reading books are not enough, I need an internship. Please contact me, I can come to USA or anywhere you want me to come to get an internship. I can sleep and live in very bad conditions and work 18 hours a day to learn how to construct Earthships. Please tell Mike Reynolds that a very eager young man is looking forward to learn his art and construct the earthships all around the Turkey. I made a facebook group to make people know about consumerism and its effects on the planet. It has reached more than 16.000 people and growing very fast. The people that I am educating are realizing their footprint on the planet and willing to go back to nature. Earthships are just the right housing for them. We also have an ecovillage project where we can construct earthships. We have everything we need except the knowledge of constructing earthships.

I know Mike Reynolds is very busy, but please tell him about me. He is going to interested because we have the same visions and same desires for the world. He will understand me.

Yours sincerely

Hi, i'm from Indonesia very much interested in visiting the states to participate in your Internship programme.

I'm trying to figure how much it would cost for an international internee like myself (travel, accomodations etc) also is there a fee that i would have to pay?

I'd love to be a part of this, and hopefully bring this concept to Indonesia, building sustainable villages in remote islands across our archipelago.

Thanks for the attention, hope to hear from you.

Cheers!
